Airport on Water
This is the Charleston "aircraft carrier post #2" from the adventures of Lindsay and Lauri in South Carolina.
This sticker was on a file cabinet in an office aboard the USS Yorktown - I thought it was funny.
Well, this post is dedicated to the TOP of the ship - the whole reason she exists: to land planes and help them take off while at sea.
This is the view from the door where you enter the flight deck....

Here's Lindsay - right before some creepy, weird old guy ran up and grabbed her and wanted to take a picture with her. Out of respect for her husband, Scott, I won't show the footage. HAHAHA!

This is the view of the front of the ship - and you can see the cool bridge from my previous posts in the background.
This plane even has the pilot's name painted on it - the royal treatment!
These are the doors that lead out to the flight deck......
And there were these big signs out there that showed each mission and the dates. Then they had symbols for all of things they accomplished on that trip. This particular trip was from 10/24/44 to 3/8/45. SO INTERESTING.
Here's the legend as to what the symbols mean....
The planes were pretty sweet!
It's so funny to see 'lane' lines down a 'runway' ON A SHIP!
All of the planes were chained down in place - can't have them running off!
It's amazing how BIG that surface is up there - SO many planes out there.

Here's a shot of the only things HIGHER than the flight deck on the boat....
A view from above the flight deck.....
It would've had to be SO LOUD to be standing right here and have a plane taking off right next to you. WOW.
It's crazy to me that a plane could take off ON A BOAT!
Here's the front airplane on the ship.....
This is the furthest back plane - at the very end. The ship drops off right behind it. BIZARRE!
The front again.....

Here are some people standing at the very back. That would be scary to land the plane on one of these ships - one wrong move and you're smashed up against a ship in the ocean!
