Round Red Barn on Route 66

When Jenks and I were stopped on Route 66 at POPS, we saw one of our favorite things - the brown tourism signs for another adventure!

It was for the Arcadia round barn - built in 1898!

Well, we had no choice but to stop and take a look.

I loved the little windows on the 2nd floor the best - so cute...

Just 7 months before, Cindy and I were on Route 66 in Amarillo, but this trip we caught up with it in the middle of Oklahoma. I love it!

From Santa Monica to Chicago - I have been checking out the middle of it.

I guess they hold banquets and functions on the second floor now - there was a party going on up there while we were in the museum on the first floor.

Those windows with the shutters/doors are too cute.

Here's Jenks getting excited about the barn! I'm glad he's as geeky as I am.......

This is how the barn looked in 1925. Amazing that this crazy round barn has lived through so much history!

I Call It POP

Over Memorial Day weekend, Jenks and I drove up to Oklahoma City for a couple days (well, like 36 hours or so) to check out the city (I had never been there). The first stop we made was just east of OKC and it's a truck stop/gas station/restaurant/tourist trap called POPS.

It's located on Route 66 in Arcadia, Oklahoma and it is famous for selling almost 500 different kinds of pop!

Here's the outside - nothing fancy......

But here's me and the ginormous pop bottle outside!

It was huge and even had a straw in it!

This is the front wall of pop bottles when you enter the place.....

This is the back wall - pop everywhere!

They had the most unique kinds, names and flavors.

Basically, you just pick up one of these 6-pack cardboard containers and then go through the coolers and pick out the bottles you want - you buy them one by one (not in cases). FUN!

AWESOME - and it's "POP", not "soda" or "Coke", people!

Look at these coolers full of pop - it was hard to pick which ones to buy!

I think this one was my favorite.....

Here's the restaurant part - a 'diner' feel.....

Here's one of our completed 6-packs. We each picked out 6 bottles, so we had 12 total.

I didn't get this one, but I thought it was hilarious! So-Duh.....get it??

OK, here are the 12:

Bubble Up (a throw back from the past), Leninade (everyone needs a Communist pop once in a while), and Frostie (it was hot, so it reminded me of cold places!).

Route 66 sodas, Dad's root beer (blast from the past), and The Pop Shoppe!

Nehi orange (I had never heard of it, but Jenks remembered it from when he was a kid), Fizzy Lizzy (it was cranberry pop with no added sugars - turned out to be NASTY), and Yacht Club grape pop (that was another of Jenks').

Dog Drool (I picked that one out - big surprise), Diet Cheerwine (I had never heard of it, but Jenks had - it was good!), and Jack Black pirate pop!

I thought this was so cute - I just had to get it, even though I really didn't know what it was going to taste like......

"Figure it out, Ye Scallywag!"

I can honestly say that I have never seen a sicle on a bottle of pop before.....but now I have!

What a fun stop along Route 66!

Beachfront Lighthouse

How appropriate - my last post about Charleston is a "sunset" one. One of the nights, we drove out to Folly Beach to eat dinner and then went out to a lighthouse afterwards.

We had to drive out to an area along the beach and park, then walk down a long road to get to the beach area where we could see the lighthouse.

By the time we got out there, we were catching the last rays of sunlight.......

It was beautiful out there......and the sand was very fine and soft.

We saw this sign - ummmm......SCARY! I'm used to lakes where tides don't come into play!

The sunset was really pretty and peaceful out there.....

We didn't get in the water, but I guess technically we can say we went to the beach!

Lindsay was disappointed because she thought that the lighthouse was going to be attached to land, but you can't get to it since it's out in the water a ways......dang it...

And on the way back, I got this pop - a throwback version of Mello Yello! I haven't had that kind of pop in a million years - YUM. It was just like I remembered. :)

Airport on Water

This is the Charleston "aircraft carrier post #2" from the adventures of Lindsay and Lauri in South Carolina.

This sticker was on a file cabinet in an office aboard the USS Yorktown - I thought it was funny.

Well, this post is dedicated to the TOP of the ship - the whole reason she exists: to land planes and help them take off while at sea.

This is the view from the door where you enter the flight deck....

Here's Lindsay - right before some creepy, weird old guy ran up and grabbed her and wanted to take a picture with her. Out of respect for her husband, Scott, I won't show the footage. HAHAHA!

This is the view of the front of the ship - and you can see the cool bridge from my previous posts in the background.

This plane even has the pilot's name painted on it - the royal treatment!

These are the doors that lead out to the flight deck......

And there were these big signs out there that showed each mission and the dates. Then they had symbols for all of things they accomplished on that trip. This particular trip was from 10/24/44 to 3/8/45. SO INTERESTING.

Here's the legend as to what the symbols mean....

The planes were pretty sweet!

It's so funny to see 'lane' lines down a 'runway' ON A SHIP!

All of the planes were chained down in place - can't have them running off!

It's amazing how BIG that surface is up there - SO many planes out there.

Here's a shot of the only things HIGHER than the flight deck on the boat....

A view from above the flight deck.....

It would've had to be SO LOUD to be standing right here and have a plane taking off right next to you. WOW.

It's crazy to me that a plane could take off ON A BOAT!

Here's the front airplane on the ship.....

This is the furthest back plane - at the very end. The ship drops off right behind it. BIZARRE!

The front again.....

Here are some people standing at the very back. That would be scary to land the plane on one of these ships - one wrong move and you're smashed up against a ship in the ocean!
