Ghosts & Legends

OK, the Buddy Holly show was the main goal of our road trip to Granbury, but Laura and I also took a "Ghosts & Legends Tour" in the evening. It was a walking tour through the town square and we learned about all of the history of the town and which places are haunted.....

This first building is the jail - circa the late 1800's. It actually held prisoners until the late 1970's - can you believe it?!

Our tour guide was great - she knew all of the facts about all of the stories, legends and buildings. And she wore that big hoop skirt when it was 90 degrees - what a trooper!

Here we learned about who haunted this big old house - I wish we could've gone inside the buildings. That would've been much creepier!

During our tour, the guide explained that Jesse James was buried in the Granbury cemetery and that he actually died in 1951, NOT 1882 like everyone would have you believe. She went into the whole story, but I can't remember it. Anyway, after the tour ended, Laura and I drove up to the cemetery to take a look......

Our tour guide said that people leave coins and bullets on his grave stone - weird!

The cemetery wasn't scary, and was actually kind of pretty because the sun was going down....but we WERE getting eaten alive by mosquitoes, so it was a quick little visit.....

You heard it here first!

And here is the grave marker for Mr. Granbury himself - the namesake of the town. And being in the south, of COURSE there's a confederate flag next to it! Looks like he was only 33 years old and killed in action in Tennessee.

There was a very weird stone circle around the area - kind of primitive, but oh well - it WAS a long time ago.....like DURING the Civil War!

Here's the marker for Davy Crockett's grandson - a decendent of the Alamo fighters. We couldn't find Davy Crockett's wife's marker, but apparently her grave site is actually Texas' smallest state parks! Just her grave is an official state park! There's a little fence around it and that's the entire thing. WOW!

It was kind of sad to see some stones in disrepair....Look at this one! I know they are old, but still......

Cemetery exploring can be so interesting!

That sounds so fun! I was looking for something to go do for my birthday and now I found it! I love Grandberry and Glen Rose. They always seem to have cool stuff there.
